Advantages and Teaching Strategies of ABA Therapy

Today, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is one of the most prevalent developmental disabilities. According to the CDC, 1 in 59 children have been diagnosed with ASD.  Children with this developmental disability may struggle in varying degrees with communication, social interaction, and repetitive interests and behaviors. There are several options for therapy based on the individual diagnosis of the child as well as his or her goals.  One option is Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy. You may already know about ABA therapy or maybe you know someone that didn’t have a good experience with ABA therapy. Therapy for children with autism is extremely individualized, and what is effective for one child may not work well for another.  Learn about all the options before deciding which type of therapy is a good fit for your child. In this article, we’ll talk a little about ABA therapy, which is the focus at bluesprigautism.com .

ABA therapy is a therapy based on the science of Behavioral Analysis that applies the principles of learning to specific behaviors to reach desired goals.  ABA has been used for decades with proven results. It is considered an evidence-based best practice treatment by the US Surgeon General and the American Psychological Association.  ABA therapy has helped thousands of children gain or improve many skills, such as communication, focus, motor skills, and social skills. There are four main steps to ABA therapy: (1) objective assessment of the child’s environment (2) understanding the context of the child’s behavior to create meaningful, individualized goals (3) application of the therapy (4) measuring progress toward the child’s goals.   Parents should also keep a close eye on the outcomes and the entire process. ABA therapy has many benefits.  It is is both flexible and customizable.  Each child will have goals based on his or her skills and behaviors at a given time.  The therapy plan may involve therapists, clinicians, parents, teachers, and others who are caregivers of the child.  And ABA therapy can be done in a variety of places - at home, in a center, at school, or in a naturally occurring setting.  Visit the homepage at Blue Sprig Autism to learn more.
